Challenges and Progress in Women’s Political Engagement: Threats, Harassment, and Turnover in Public Office

The landscape of women in politics is evolving, with Wisconsin women making strides in closing gender gaps in elected positions. However, a recent report from the Brennan Center for Justice highlights a concerning trend of increased threats and harassment towards political candidates, particularly women.

Erin Vilardi, CEO of Vote Run Lead, expressed her concerns about the impact of these threats on women candidates, who are now having to budget for security details due to safety concerns. The report found that women were three to four times more likely than men to experience abuse targeting their gender.

Vilardi emphasized the need for party leaders to condemn political violence and for states to implement stronger protections for officeholders. She also noted that the threats are extending beyond women candidates to include conservative white men, as well as top aides and political journalists.

The escalating climate of threats and harassment could deter more women from running for office, leading to fewer opportunities for gender equality in leadership positions. Vilardi urged constituents to show support for women officeholders as they navigate these challenges and consider their political futures.
