“Foreign-Born Population in the US Reaches 46 Million in 2022: Insights from US Census Bureau Data”
The United States has seen a significant increase in its foreign-born population, with approximately 46 million individuals born outside the country now residing in the US. This accounts for around 14 percent of the total US population of 333 million, according to data from the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
India has emerged as the second-largest source country for new citizens in the United States, with an estimated 65,960 Indians obtaining US citizenship in 2022. This places India just behind Mexico in terms of contributing new citizens to America.
The latest Congressional report on US Naturalisation Policy reveals that a total of 969,380 individuals were naturalised as US citizens in the fiscal year 2022. Mexicans comprised the largest number of naturalisations, followed by individuals from India, the Philippines, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
As of 2023, there were 2,831,330 foreign-born American nationals from India, making it the second-largest group after Mexico. However, around 42 percent of India-born foreign nationals living in the US are currently ineligible to apply for US citizenship.
Despite concerns over processing backlogs for naturalisation applications, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has made progress in reducing the number of pending applications. By the end of FY2023, USCIS had approximately 408,000 pending naturalisation applications, down from previous years.
Overall, the report highlights the growing diversity of the US population and the importance of immigration policies in shaping the country’s demographic landscape.
